30 buildings that have high cultural value
The Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum was established in 1993 and includes 30 buildings that have high cultural value. These buildings were restored because of their deteriorating condition from the Edo period to Showa period. The museum exhibits a wide variety of architectural styles in 3 different zones. The west zone exhibits farmhouses from Musashino city and residential structures from the Yamanote area in Tokyo. The central zone exhibits historical upper class buildings while the east zone exhibits older traditional style Japanese neighborhoods. Acclaimed animator, Hayao Miyazaki often visited the east zone for inspiration while creating his film, “Spirited Away” in 2001. He also created the museum’s mascot Edomaru, a small green caterpillar with big eyes.
