Have you ever heard of a place called “Kanaya Base” in Minami-Boso, Chiba Prefecture?
The old guesthouse I will introduce today is closely linked with this place.
Kanaya Base is a co-working space and shared studio built for revitalizing the town of Kanaya. You can get there in about 2 hours by car from Tokyo. The guesthouse “Shihedon” was established for those who gather in Kanaya to enjoy events and provides a place for people to stay if they have traveled a long way. This guesthouse has become popular among the creators, who are trying to have 2 bases in Tokyo and Chiba.
Volunteers through D.I.Y are renovating the old house! Is it still under construction!?
Due to the lack of renovation costs, volunteers have renovated Shihedon. They deliberately didn’t ask for help because they wanted to have a good opportunity to try to see how much they could manage by themselves. They hold events to recruit people for volunteer work and to also collect monetary donations. Volunteers are renovating it through a “do it yourself” method and you will see some unique and playful themes in the guesthouse.
Many people have gathered at the opening party.
The opening party was held on May 2013 with many visitors. As you can see from this photo, the guesthouse was built from the dreams of many people. You can also see many names listed on Shihedon’s website as a Special Thanks.
Fujita-san, the landlord had lived in Tokyo and Kanaya, having 2 bases in his life.
Fujita san had lived in both Kanaya and Tokyo since he was in college. After graduating, he moved to Kanaya and became the landlord of the guesthouse. I believe more and more people will have 2 bases life to be able to slowly shift their permanent base to a rural area. I think it is better to have a shifting process to live in rural area more than just suddenly moving to an unfamiliar place. This is good method for both the people who are moving as well as the local people because it provides an opportunity to gradually get to know one another.
Boso peninsula has a relatively a climate, even in the winter.
Kanaya base often holds events, so I recommend staying in KANAYA for 1 night.
