On the 12th of July, I watched“Hikisome”, preparation for Gion Festival in Shijokarasuma, Kyoto.(MOVIE)

Yama and Hoko are pulled in preparation, prior to the official day of Gion Matsuri. Even though its still in preparation, it’s very impressive. Men usually pull the Yamahoka, but women and children can also participate.

You can get a great view around Shijo-karasuma station.

Hi, it’s Guri from Tadaima Japan. I visited Kyoto where Gion Matsuri is now being held.
The cicadas suddenly started chirping and people in Kyoto were saying that summer has arrived due to Gion Matsuri. This time I watched “Hikisome”, the preparation for Yamahoko Junko at Kyoto’s Gion Matsuri.
I was able to see 5 Hoko being pulled around Karasuma station.

5 Kinds of Hoko

Kankoboko

“Kankoboko”was the first and was pulled 100 meters down the street, from Hankyu Karasuma station to Karasuma street.

Kankoboko

Look at it’s height! I can see why it’s called “Hoko”, literally meaning ‘sword’.

Niwatorihoko

Following Kankoboko was Niwatoriboko.

Niwatorihoko

Just after they shouted, “En-ya-rayaaa!”, they began pulling the hoko. Nothing beats than the moment when you see a large hoko start moving!

Niwatorihoko

They had practiced the Gion Hayashi (instrumental music) for 1 year in preparation for the event and it sounds so nostalgic.

Kikusuihoko

Next up was Kikusuihoko. It was so dynamic to see the hoko moving through the narrow path!

Tsukihoko

I moved over to the west side and saw Tsukihoko being pulled.

Tsukihoko

Their original Happi jackets are so cool!

My battery died before filming Naginatahoko.

The leading hoko, Naginatahoko, for Yamahoko Junko was just about to begin practicing on the east side of Karasuma station. Unfortunately, my camera battery died! What an unlucky day.

This year’s festival is divided into 2 parts, the former festival and the latter festival.
The hoko I introduced today will parade on the 16th (Yoiyama) and 17th (Yamahoko Junko) of July! Kyoto’s summer has finally arrived!
