Do you know the purpose of a Mikoshi?
Mikoshis’ can usually be found at Japanese festivals and are vehicles for the traveling spirit of a god.
The ritual consists of moving the spirit from a shrine to a specific location and the Mikoshi is carried on the shoulders of volunteers. Otabisho is term that refers to the designated spiritual location and some areas have locations unique to Otabisho.
Unique locations include rivers, seas, and more specifically a location of a certain goddess for a romantic encounter between the god of men and the god of women.
When you see a Mikoshi you will know that it’s a special time of the year that a god is in route to a particular ceremony.
