Autumn has finally arrived!

Some of you might think autumn foliage, but in fact, autumn is also the season of harvest! Rice, pumpkins, chestnuts, potatoes, mushrooms, saury, salmon, pears, apples, oranges, grapes, persimmon, wine… many tasty foods are available to eat during this season! You’ll find many autumnal foods in supermarkets. I headed to Shiojiri in Nagano and ate freshly harvested pears and grapes for an hour and a half, because I like to eat!

The organic fruit fields of “Harayuuranen”

“Harayuuen” is located near highway 19 and you’ll see many advertisements for it along the way, so it’s difficult to get lost. They don’t use herbicide in Harayuuranen, growing fruits organically or with the use of natural herbicides. You don’t have to worry about eating directly from the tree, because it’s safe. There were lots of children too! They grow grapes, pears, apples, prunes and peaches. There are five different kinds of grapes including Delaware, Portland, and Niagara. They also grow three different kinds of peaches. One benefit when visiting is, you can eat it as much as you want with no time limit! You can even bring your own lunch and enjoy fruit throughout the day.

Grape

Start off by picking grapes!

According to the staff, Niagara grapes were ripe enough today to eat, so I started picking.
This grape smells very strong, exciting my taste buds. If the grape looks yellow, it means that it’s ripe. You should also pick grapes from the brown colored branches, because it signifies that the grape has reached its maximum nutrition potential. Once you find a cluster of grapes you like, cut it off with scissors.

Picking up grapes.

Swallowing the grape whole! A unique way of eating Niagara grapes.

The staff taught me how to eat the grapes. You hold it by it’s skin and pinch it to peel off the skin.
You should also drink the leftover juice in the skin, tasting its sweetness.
Another way to eat it is to eat the grape whole! The best way to taste the Niagara grape’s sweetness, is to not chew it and suck on it like a piece of hard candy.
You usually don’t want to eat the seed when eating grapes, but it adds a bitter taste and makes the sweet flavor, sour. It’s actually easy to swallow the grape if you’re not used to it. Enjoy this experience! We had 4 clusters of grapes between the two of us.

Pear

Next, let’s eat fresh pears!

Hosui pears are also ripe enough to eat.
To choose the good pear, you should pick one with a faint green color around the stem.
It was so juicy and fresh! I really love pears and ate more than enough!
You can buy grapes and pears at markets, so why not choose some for souvenirs?

Winery

Let’s go to a winery! There are 8 wineries around this area.

Wine made in Shiojiri uses high quality grapes and wins awards in international competitions. The wineries all offer a tasting booth and some of them have tours. Don’t worry if you can’t drink alcohol, they also have grape juice. I had a little wine, just to taste it! I even bought a bottle to enjoy at home!

Why not spend a day in Nagano during grape season?
