Hakata Machiya Street, where you can experience history

Once you enter a narrow street from Odori/Daighaku dori street, you’ll see a silent, calm area called Gokusyo.
You’ll begin to see 100-year-old houses called Machiya. There have been some modern cafes opened recently, and it’s becoming even more exciting.

町屋

This is a popular liquor store with a very retro atmosphere called Yoshitake Saketen.

In the evening, you can drink at the bar, so it’s nice to drink and meet new people.

In the back of the street, there are several small to large temples. Saikyo-ji Temple is definitely a must see. It was built about 250 years ago and the sculpture on the tower is amazing, even though it’s somewhat weathered.

Shofuku-ji Temple

It was built in 1195. The letters “扶桑最初禅窟(ふそうさいしょぜんくつ)”on the gate show that it was the first Zen Temple established in Japan.

Tea tree

Tea tree

Yousai, the first chief priest from the Rinzai sect, brought Zen and Tea from China. This area is very famous for it’s tea. You can see tea trees that Yousai actually planted. They have a great tea room where you can enjoy drinking tea, so why not take a break and relax for a while?

This small path near the West Gate of Shofuku-ji looks like the old scenery from a movie, and is often used as a filming location.
