Ponding

The rainy season in Japan

Japan has four seasons, as well as a rainy season from May to July. The rain is great for plants, giving them a more vivid color. During the rainy season, you will often have constant rainfall all day long. There’s a time when it gets really hot in the middle of the season, and occasionally storms come at the end of the season.

The hydrangea changes its color over time. Each hydrangea blooms differently, even though it’s from the same stock, but why?

The reason why hydrangea blooms differently

The color of hydrangea is usually blue or pink. When the soil is acidic, it blooms blue, and when the soil is alkaline, it blooms pink. Japanese hydrangea often blooms blue.
Hydrangea has a pigment called anthocyanin, and the color will differ according to the amount of aluminum absorbed from the soil. The reason why each hydrangea blooms differently is because each location has a different amount of aluminum.

Another reason is aging. Hydrangea changes its color over time. At the beginning, it often looks green because of the green chlorophyll. As the chlorophyll degrades, it generates anthocyanin, which changes its color.
