The symbol of Mt.Yoshino! Let’s take a walk around Kinpusenji Temple under the cherry blossoms in full bloom!!

Simo-senbon, Naka-senbon, Kami-senbon and Oku-senbon in Mt.Yoshino all bloom in chronological order starting from early April through late April.
So we can enjoy the cherry blossoms in Mount Yoshino for the whole month of April.
Senbon means a thousand trees. At each district, you can see thousands of cherry blossom trees in one view!
This time, I’ll introduce you to Simo-senbon, and Naka-senbon!

About Onodachiato in Simo-senbon

I recommend that you see the cherry blossom trees from observatory, Shokenkoutaigu-onodachiato(昭憲皇太后•御野立ち跡).
This scene, which you can see from the observatory, is one of the most beautiful cherry blossom scenes in Mt.Yoshino.
There are benches so you can take a break there!

Kinpusenji Temple’s Zao-do and the two statues in Simo-senbon

The Kinpusenji Temple stands on the Simo-senbon of Mt. Yoshino.
Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range(紀伊山地の霊場と参詣道), which contains the Kinpusenji Temple’s Zao-do (main hall) and Nio-mon gate was registered as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2004.
There are two statues at the main gate of Kinpusenji temple.
The main hall, Zao-do, is the second largest wooden structure and the two statues are the second biggest statues in Japan after the Great Buddha of Nara.

In the late 7th century, En no Gyouja(役行者) enshrined the statues of the deity Zaou Gongen(蔵王権現), which were made of cherry blossom trees, and built the Kinpusenji Temple.
For this reason, cherry blossom trees became sacred at Mt. Yoshino.

花供懺法会

Hanakusempōe(花供懺法会) is held at Kinpusenji Temple from April 10th to 12th. It is a festival to announce to Zaō-gongen that the cherry blossoms have bloomed.
The main objects of Kinpusenji Temple are three Zaō-gongen statues, and each measure up to 7 meters high. But they are not open to the public.
However, you can see them from April 1st to May 7th.

吉野南朝皇居跡

About Yoshinonanchokoukyoato in Shimo-senbon

Yoshinonanchokoukyoato(吉野南朝皇居跡) is the remains of the imperial palace.
700 years ago, the Emperor Go-Daigo set up the Southern Court in Yoshino, beginning the Period of the Northern and Southern Courts(1336〜1392).
There is an octagonal three-story pagoda and you can enjoy cherry blossoms and beautiful sunset from there!

一目千本

About Yoshimizu shrine in Naka-senbon

Yoshimizu shrine is registered as a World Heritage Site.
There is a spot of Hitoe-senbon(一目千本) in Yoshimizu shrine and you can view a thousand cherry blossom trees at a glance!!
Don’t miss a great photo opportunity!
And it is the place where Toyotomi Hideyoshi(豊臣 秀吉) who unified the country held a big cherry blossom viewing party in 1594.

世界遺産•吉水神社

The shrine served as the temporary seat of Emperor Go-Daigo, after he established a Southern Court at Yoshino, which effectively made the shrine an Imperial Palace.
Please enjoy this historical shrine!
And the shrine is famous for Goshuin(御朱印).
Goshuin can be received by visitors in buddhist temples and shinto shrines. It is a large stamp, written in ink that proves your visit to a particular temple.
Goshuin, collecting insignia stamps will make your visit to temples and shrines more fun
