The only place to find Snow Monkeys bathing in Hot Spring Baths

Located 850 meters above sea level, Jigokudani means ‘Hell Valley’ and was named by the ancient people living in the area because of the steep cliffs and the steam rising up off the hot springs.
The Japanese Macaque Monkeys reside here and it’s the only place in the world to witness them bathing in hot springs. Around the early 1960’s these monkeys started their bathing routine and it’s said that it originated from the baby monkeys curiosity when watching the local people bathing.
Witnessing this event allows the viewer to take pleasure from the expressions and emotions seen on the monkeys’ faces.
