What is this circular shaped food? Is it pizza? No, it’s Japanese Okonomiyaki. The shape resembles a pizza but the taste is very different. Okonomiyaki originated around 1935 and at the time, flower was mixed with water, baked, and seasoning was added. This was considered a popular ‘everyday’ type of food.
Now days, Okonomiyaki is made by mixing flour, eggs, shredded cabbage, seafood and/or pork, and cooked on a hot griddle like a pancake. A special, Okonomiyaki sauce is then spread over the top. Okonomiyaki ingredients can differ depending on the area. In Osaka, mayonnaise is substituted for the special sauce and in Hiroshima, Japanese Yakisoba noodles are added making the Okonomiyaki a very filling meal. The most challenging part to cooking it is flipping it over to cook both sides because of the possibility of it completely falling apart.
It’s very delicious, do you want to try it?
