TSUTENKAKU, The Tower That Reaches The Heavens

Located in the Shinsekai area of downtown Osaka is the Tsutenkaku Observation Tower.
Its construction was finished in 1921 and at the time, was the highest observation tower in the Orient. In 1943 it was severely damaged in a fire and rather than repairing it, it was totally rebuilt and re-opened in 1956.
The official character of Tsutenkaku is the famous god of happiness, Billiken. It’s said that if you touch the sole of Billiken’s feet one will receive good luck. Billiken’s soles have been touched so much over the years that they’ve become very smooth and shiny.
The area around Tsutenkaku has been kept to resemble the older days of the area and visitors feel as if they are on a movie set.
Kushi-katsu, a skewer type fried food that consists of a meat and vegetable medley, is popular to the area. One might become overwhelmed on where to dine because of the many different types of restaurants including those that serve okonomiyaki, motsu-nabe, and kushi-katsu.
