From mother to daughter. “Hina no Tsurushi Kazari” is decoratively stringing up handmade dolls to wish for a daughter’s health and happiness.

Those who are not wealthy also wish for the healthy development of their daughters.

The ancient tradition of “Hina no Tsurushi Kazari” originated at Izu’s Inatori Onsen (hot spring) and is slightly different from “Hina-ningyo” that we introduced earlier, but these dolls are also meant to represent a wish for the health and happiness of a daughter(s).
Long ago, only affluent households could afford to purchase the 5/7-layer stands full of luxurious dolls. Less affluent families also wanted to pray for the health of their daughters and granddaughters, even if they had to use handmade dolls. It is said that this is how “Hina no Tsurushi Kazari” began.

Over 50 types of pretty dolls!

There are over 50 types of these pretty dolls, with each and every one having a different meaning. For example, the “peach” doll drives away evil spirits, leading to a long life. It also means that the daughter will have many children. The triangular doll represents medicine and will protect the daughter from illness. The doll that looks like a crawling baby who wants to get up and walk as soon as possible, represents a wish for a daughter’s development. These dolls, each carefully handmade, all have warm expressions that represent the kindness of mothers and grandmothers as they wish for the well being of their daughters and granddaughters.
