The Sakura Line 311 will plant Sakura trees at points where the tsunami reached furthest inland.
They will be handed down to future generations for protection.
It’s a campaign that started in Rikuzentakata city, Iwate Prefecture.

<Not to forget the damage caused by the tsunami and earthquake and to protect the future. The Sakura Line 311 was launched in Rikuzentakata city.>

On March 11th, 2011 we had the great east Japan earthquake. Many places along the northeast coast were damaged by the tsunami, including Rikuzentakata city, which was also largely damaged with many precious lives lost.

Sanriku coast including Rikuzentakata city had been massively damaged by a tsunami before. They thought, “What if we could learn from our ancestor’s experiences of tsunami…” They couldn’t keep regretting tsunami disasters anymore, so people who live there today started what has become known as The Sakura Line 311, in order to protect future generations.

The Sakura Line 311 is an NPO campaign set up to plant Sakura trees where the tsunami reached furthest inland along a line 170 kilometers long with 1 tree being planted every 10 kilometers. If a tsunami comes again, people can aim for the Sakura trees up on the high points to escape from the tsunami. These Sakura trees can act as a landmark to help save future generations.

<Why not join us to save future lives?>

The Sakura Line 311 holds planting tree events twice a year every spring and autumn. During the events, they recruit volunteers from all around the world. As of December 2014, a total of 2,136 people have come to plant a total of 767 trees. Some people from foreign countries had volunteered, just by seeing the campaign on the Internet. In 2015, they will have a tree-planting event in November, with recruiting starting in September. Why not join us to save future lives?
