You can hear the sounds of the waves. Does it look like Porco’s hideout from the Japanese anime film, “Porco Rosso?”
“Ryugu Sea Cave” is a natural cave in Touji, Shimoda city in Shizuoka Prefecture. The erosion of the Touji beach created this sea cave. It is so quiet inside that you can hardly hear anything other than the sounds of the waves. The skylight was created by the top eroding away and allows light to shine in, creating a mysterious atmosphere.

By being inside the cave you can feel the quiet and spiritual vibes purifying your mind, but when you visit, please also try to view the cave from the top. There’s a corner called “Heart view spot,” where you can see the heart-shape of the sea cave and is really popular among couples. Don’t hesitate to go there even if you are single, because you can’t miss the beautiful cobalt blue sea of Touji and enjoy the beauty of the Izu Peninsula all at the same time.
Why is the cave is heart-shaped?
After a submarine volcano erupted, accumulated pumice stones and volcanic ashes became layers. The part of layers that were intolerant to erosion, crumbled away and divided into two directions resulting in the heart-shape you see today. The cave used to have a ceiling, but it collapsed due to degradation over time, creating the skylight. It is truly a work of art by Mother Nature.
