Huge walls of snow are created after removing the snow!
Have you heard of Yuki-no-Otani? It might be familiar to those who like to ski, because Toyama Prefecture is famous for having many areas for skiing.
Yuki-no-Otani is the 500-meter long section in the Tateyama Kurobe Alpen route that connects Tateyama station in Toyama and Ougizawa station in Nagano Prefecture. It’s is not just an ordinary road, the section is covered with snow every year and snow removal is done with the help of GPS. Clearing the snow creates very tall walls of snow on the side of road called Yuki-no-Otani, which can sometimes measure 20-meters in height!

To get there, you take a cable car and change to a bus at Murodo station. You’ll feel as if you are wrapped up by nature when walking along side of the large walls of snow. If it’s sunny, you can enjoy the vivid contrast of the blue sky and the white snow! There are also snow sleds, and snow message boards that you can carve a message in. It might be a bit challenging to get here by cable car and bus, but it’s definitely worth it!
The opening period is between April 16th and June 22nd 2016!
The sun reflecting off the snow feels so warm and nice, but at the same time it’s really bright. I recommend that you bring sunglasses or a hat that can provide shade for your face. You should also choose adequate shoes for walking on the frozen road, because some parts freeze over after the snow is cleared. It is opened until 22nd June. Why not visit the plains of silvery white snow in Tateyama, Toyama Prefecture?
