Friday June 5th to Sunday June 7th, Kanazawa Hyakumangoku Matsuri in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture

This traditional festival has been celebrated for over 400 years in Kanazawa. There will be many people who will come from all over Japan to march in the parade dressed in various Japanese costumes. This event is known as “Hyakumangoku-gyoretsu.” You can also witness a ritual event called “Ochatori-no-gishiki,” where holy water is brought to a tearoom and dancers perform Kanazawa’s traditional dance called “Hyakumangoku-odori-nagashi.”

Saturday June 6th to Sunday June 7th: Torikoe Matsuri in Taito-ku Tokyo

The Mikoshi (or portable shrine) they carry around at the festival is the heaviest in Tokyo, weighing almost 4 tons. In the old days, shrine parishioners showed off their wealth by the size and weight of their Mikoshi. On Sunday, the parishioners parade this Mikoshi around town. In the evening, lighting the Mikoshi’s lanterns and street lanterns symbolizes the festival entering its peak time. There will be lots of food vendors too.

Earth day 2015

Saturday June 6th to Sunday June 7th: Earth Day 2015 in Showa Kinen Park, Tokyo

Earth Day literally means the day to think about the earth and show support for environmental protection. There will be handcraft markets, workshops, exhibitions by NPO, flea markets, food vendors, and many special events. It is very famous among people in Tama city.

BeerFes Tokyo 2015

Saturday June 6th to Sunday June 7th: Beer Festival 2015 in Meguro-ku, Tokyo

Surprisingly enough, you can taste more than 120 kinds of craft beers and imported beers at an‘all you can drink’ event! For those of you who love beer, it’s a chance to taste rare beers. Snacks are also available for purchase to complement the beer. All participants get a special beer glass for the best tasting experience.

Sanno Matsuri

Sunday June 7th to Wednesday June 17th: Sanno Matsuri 

This festival has a history of more than 1300 years. There will be about 500 people dressed in gorgeous costumes marching in a procession that measures 300 meters long. They walk through a cogon grass ring at the Shrine to wish for longevity and good health. You can also see the traditional Japanese orchestra and drum performances.

Wednesday June 10th to Sunday June 14th: YOSAKOI Soran Matsuri in Sapporo city, Hokkaido

This festival has a performance of Hokkaido’s folksong “Soran Bushi,” using Kochi Prefecture’s instrument, the Naruko. The center of Sapporo city will be the locale for performances with the slogan, “The Street is the Stage.” Dancing teams will perform in Odori Park at 20 different venues. Recently, more and more dancers have been coming from other countries.

Chagu Chagu parade

Saturday June 13th: Chagu Chagu Umakko in Morioka city, Iwate Prefecture

During this festival, colorfully decorated horses will be paraded around town in appreciation for their hard work on local farms. They will march the streets for 4 hours for a distance of 13 kilometers. This event, “Chagu chagu,” was named after the sound of the horses marching the streets. People in the southern area of Morioka have cared for their horses as if they are their own family members.

Rice planting

Sunday June 14th: Otaue Shinji (Rice planting ceremony) in Osaka

This event is to wish for a rich rice harvest for the year at the beginning of the planting season. After the first ceremony is held at the shrine, people line up in the parade and march to the rice field where God dwells. Otanushi, the leader of the ceremony, pours holy water on the field and plants the rice during a music and dance performance called Garaku.

Sapporo Matsuri

Sunday June 14th June to Tuesday June 16th: Sapporo Matsuri 

On Sunday June 14th and Monday, June 15th they will welcome many Gods through special dedications. On Tuesday, June 16th there will be more than 1000 people dressed in colorful costumes in reminiscence of the people from a popular Heian period picture scroll. They will parade around town with 4 Mikoshi. They depart Hokkaido-jinguu shrine in the morning and perform at Odori in the afternoon. There will be many people coming to see the performances. Traditional events are held in Hokkaido-jinguu Shrine and Nakajima Park.
