Now is the best season to visit Oirase-keiryu.
The River Oirase flows from lake Towada, located between Aomori Prefecture and Akita Prefecture. The area known as Oirase-keiryu, starts at Konoguchi and continues to Mt. Yakeyama. This area is designated as a natural monument and a place of special scenic beauty. The abundance of nature, beech trees, and the stream of water with its interestingly shaped rocks entertain people throughout the season. The promenades and roads are paved, so you can either trek through or drive through and enjoy the special scenery.
The best season to visit is during autumn, but I also recommend visiting during May and June. The vivid greens in your eyes is so refreshing and the sound of river’s stream is absolutely stunning! You might feel like a dwarf, lost in a miniature garden. If you’re a fan of Bonsai or Kokedama, you might have a special appreciation for this area.
The intricate beauty of nature
The main supply of water comes from lake Towada, so the amount of water is stable and less likely to flood. Therefore, the beautiful scenery of the Oirase-keiryu mountain stream has always been preserved. (Currently, the amount of water is controlled at a floodgate.)
If you look at the rocks scattered in middle, you’ll notice that they’re covered with plants growing through the surface of the water. It looks just like a work of art!
You can enjoy the changing scenery of Oirase.
“Showa-ike” pond was created by a landslide due to a Typhoon they had in 1958. The huge landslide created the powerful stream called “heisei-no-nagare.”
These two entities exist very close to each other, showing the contrast of silence and ferociousness. It might be a place that teaches you about the power of nature that can change a river of water.
In this article I introduced the greener, summer scenery, but you can actually come and enjoy any season here. Autumn is especially nice with the changing colors of the foliage! Please decide which season might be your favorite time to visit and come enjoy the spectacular scenery!
