This is a traditional festival where fishermen compete in a boat race once a year in hopes for a successful harvest. There are programs such as the “Madonnna Harley” for the fisherwomen and “Shokuiki Harley”, the battle among fishing companies. Harley refers to racing boat. Even non-fishermen can apply for this event, and it’s very popular.

Saturday, 20th June: “Okutsugaru Mushi and Himatsuri” in Goshogawara city, Aomori Prefecture
This festival is for showing gratitude to God for the successful planting of rice. The rice woven straw insects are marched around town. These insects are hung on large trees and enshrined as guardian deities that protect people from an epidemic and protect crops from harmful insects that ultimately will lead to a large harvest. At night, you can see a fire festival where they lite the insects on fire. The way they burn looks like dragons blowing fire from their mouth.

This festival is held at Omishima, Ehime Prefecture to pray for a large harvest. The referee starts the fight, and a sumo wrestler fights against the invisible spirit of rice. It looks like the wrestler is fighting alone, and the audience cheers him on. It’s always one win and one loss. To let the spirit win at the end of the game, they promise a large harvest during the year.

Sunday, 21st June: Cosplay Festa TDC at Tokyo Dome City Attractions, Prism Hall in Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo.
An event where you can enjoy attractions at Tokyo Dome City and the unique cosplayers! There will be serious cosplayers with more than 2000 of them gathered together, and more than 6000 people will come to see the world’s largest cosplay event. Taking photos of the various different attractions will be fun, as well as riding some attractions at Tokyo Dome City!

This is held at Akasaki Shrine. You’ll see many people outside, lined up for the hot spring, wearing their Yukata (summer kimono). In the old days, a house with a cedar tree branch hanging at its entrance was said to protect from the epidemic during that time. Cedar tree branches are sold at the entrance of the Shrine, and the custom of hanging them still continues today.

Saturday, 27th June: Gokuro Matsuri in Yoshinogawa city, Tokushima Prefecture
The festival is a tribute the comedian from Kamojimacho town, Soganoya Goro, who appeared in the movie “Nonkinatosan” in 1925. The street in front of the station is a pedestrian precinct, and people disguised as Soganoya goro play music related to Kamojimacho. There will be marching bands that play Gokuro-daiko (drum). There will also be many food vendors.

Tuesday 30th June to Thursday 2nd July: Aizen Matsuri in Osaka city, Osaka
This festival enshrines the God of Aizome, who is the master of charm, popularity and matchmaking. On the first day, a girl in a Yukata called “Aizen-musume,” is carried on a palanquin (wheel-less vehicle) and marched through the street while people shout and chant. Following that, there will be some traditional performances and a Matsuri Yashi (orchestra) performing on site.
