The most famous okonomiyaki shop in Hiroshima, ”Micchan”, is loved by local people.

Micchan is an okonomiyaki shop that has been loved by people in Hiroshima since 1950. It is located in the busy area called Hacchobori and there are always people waiting in line during lunchtime. I recommend that you to go there when the shop opens! Their sauce is something special. Let’s eat it with a lot of sauce! An English menu is available too.

Micchan okonomiyaki

Let’s go there when it opens!

The most famous okonomiyaki shop, Micchan, is in Hiroshima and we were told by local people that it’s very good.
The tasty smell of okonomiyaki drifted around the canteen and made me really hungry. We were so excited about what kind of okonomiyaki we were gonna get!

The local people told us that we should go there when it opens, because the canteen is really popular. We arrived at 11:20 and there were no people waiting in line, because it was weekday. Soon after that, people started lining up. If you don’t want to wait in line, I recommend that you go there right when they open.

Our recommendation is the special menu selection.

There are so many toppings to choose from, and I couldn’t decide. We finally decided to order the special menu and oyster okonomiyaki, so we could enjoy all of what Hiroshima had to offer! The special menu has all the popular toppings, squid, shrimp, and mochi. You can choose either soba or udon, but we chose soba, most typical for Hiroshima’s okonomiyaki.

The cooking procedure is also fun to watch!

There are tables and counters in the canteen. If you chose a counter seat, you could see the okonomiyaki being cooked right before your eyes. It’s fun to watch how it’s made so quickly and rhythmically. Even if you chose to sit at a table, you can still watch and you don’t have to bother other customers. It’s done!

These are the plates of okonomiyaki we were served! They smelt so good!
Let’s eat them with the sauce!

Micchan’s sauce

They have 2 different sauces. Hiroshima’s otafuku sauce and Micchan’s special sauce. If you prefer a sweeter sauce, try the otafuku sauce. If you like a bit more of a sour sauce, I recommend Micchan’s sauce. You can use lemon juice and mayonnaise as garnish too.

It’s thought of as being cool in Hiroshima, if you eat it with the silver spatula and not with the chop sticks. Cut them into small pieces and eat them with the spatula!

Micchan’s philosophy

Micchan is the first shop that invented the thick okonomiyaki sauce. The sauce has had small changes since 1952. It uses a lot of fruits and vegetables that add a natural sweetness to the ingredients. They also use carefully chosen cabbage and even cut it differently everyday. To get the full taste of the cabbage, they only use water and flour for the dough.
The cabbage and the sauce are the most important parts of Hiroshima okonomiyaki.

the history of Micchan

The history of Micchan

The people of Hiroshima have considered Hiroshima style okonomiyaki as their soul food. The owner of Micchan, Mr, Mitsuo Ise, is the person who started okonomiyaki in Hiroshima.
In 1950, when the canteen opened, okonomiyaki was just a thin crepe that had only a small amount of cabbage and spring onions. The okonomiyaki at the time was folded over and covered with sauce. He improved on okonomiyaki during the 1950’s and 60’s, by stuffing it with more ingredients, commonly know today as Hiroshima’s soul food.
