Iizaka Kenka Matsuri is the best event to see during Fukushima’s autumn schedule of festivals.
The main festival in autumn at Hachiman Shrine in Iizaka, Fukushima is held every year across three days centered around the first Saturday of October. This festival, said to have started 300 years, is held to give thanks to the gods for a good harvest and to pray for the peace and tranquility of the town for the coming year. However, stemming from the violence exhibited when entering the shrine on the night of the second day, at some point over the years its name was changed to Kenka Matsuri (Fighting Festival).
Floats from six towns violently crash into each other to stop the portable shrines from entering the shrine.
On the second day of the festival the parade for the Portable Shrines and the Faith Festival can be seen starting in the morning, with the procession in and around Iizaka. Then as dusk arrives, the six Taiko drum floats holding the portable shrines make their return to Hachiman Shrine.
On the way back, the portable shrines lead the way and begin jumbling around with the 1-ton floats violently crashing into each other. Once the portable shrines are able to enter the main shrine, the festival is drawn to a close. The floats crashing into each other is to prevent the portable shrines from entering. For approximately two hours, the floats provide a striking performance as they bravely and violently crash into one another. Make sure to also pay close attention to the Taiko drums that play along with their great power and strength.

The Iizaka Kenka Matsuri is held at Iizaka Hot Springs, a famous hot spring village in the Tohoku region. It offers a great number of large and small Japanese hot spring inns. You can stay at a hot spring hotel to relax and enjoy their hot springs, or you can soak in a hot spring with the locals at one of the nine common baths or four footbaths available in the village.
Fukushima is also famous for its delicious fruit. Fall is the season for grapes, Japanese pears, apples, and La France pears, so please make sure to enjoy some freshly picked fruit as well.
