Typical souvenir shopping in a décor that resembles ancient Nara city.
You can select from various souvenirs at traditional Japanese style shops decorated with materials like Japanese paper, stone, and wood.
Famous and long selling souvenirs in Nara are Narazuke (sweet & tangy vegetable pickles marinated in sake lees), Yoshinokuzu (food made from Kudzu starch, or pueraria lobate), and Kakinoha-sushi (Pressed sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves, a local cuisine of Nara).
I recommended Narazuke at TukenaEikichi (漬菜栄吉), Yoshinokuzu at Tengyokudou (天極堂), and Kakinoha-sushi at Izasa (ゐざさ).
Narashogaku (奈良祥樂) is a Japanese/western-style sweets shop that has sweets packaged in a box with a traditional Shosoin design (animals, plants, and nature).
There is also a unique sweet called Rahotsu manju* that resemble Buddha’s curly hair.
*manju: Japanese steamed bun staffed with sweet red bean paste.
Rahotsu manju is a Karinto manju, which is a new version of manju .
Karinto are fried-dough cookies and Rahotsu manju are fried buns wrapped in a crispy dough with sweet red bean paste. The secret to the taste is the savory brown sugar in the dough and the sweet red bean paste.
They can’t produce Rahotsu manju on a large scale, because it’s handmade in their factory.
